Job description
The Environment Agency are committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
If you’re driven by the idea of protecting and restoring the water environment, this is a chance to turn that passion into impact. The water industry is entering a transformative period, and your work could help shape how it responds to major environmental challenges.
You’ll join the national Water Quality Regulatory Development team within the Environment and Business directorate, where we champion the protection and improvement of water quality across England. We influence water industry investment decisions, guide long‑term planning, and turn environmental ambition into action. As we prepare for the next Price Review and River Basin Management Plan, we’re looking for an Advisor to support this work.
You’ll operate at the intersection of policy, planning, and delivery. Day-to-day you could be shaping water quality investment programmes, supporting technical leads in developing and delivering new water quality work programmes, or advising wider teams in applying policy. Your understanding of water quality and environmental policy will help teams align their work to prioritise environmental outcomes. You’ll balance customer needs with legislative requirements, ensuring decisions are practical and environmentally responsible. You can expect collaboration, variety, and complex problem-solving.
The choices made now will influence the health of our waters for decades. You’ll help guide the work of water companies and contribute to a healthier, more resilient water environment.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You’ll also have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
- A degree in an environmental discipline OR equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrable understanding of environmental water quality challenges, water quality regulatory frameworks, and water industry management practices.
- Knowledge of water industry planning and the Price Review.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills: able to identify your audience, know their needs, and use an effective and engaging style of both written and oral communication.
- Ability to identify opportunities for improvements and efficiencies, develop new approaches/processes and embed them successfully.
- Numerical and IT confidence.
- Knowledge of how to develop new workstreams and land them within the wider business.
- Ability to respond to tight deadlines, prioritise, and work quickly and accurately.
- Highly motivated and able to work independently.
- Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues at work.
- (Desirable) Experience creating trackers and visual dashboards, such as Power BI.
You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
Occasional national travel for meetings will be required, which may include overnight stays.
You’ll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. We’ll help you find a role to suit your needs. Appropriate training will be given. #LI-DNI
