Job description

Are you an experienced and motivated Senior Data Scientist or Analyst with a passion for using data to deliver real-world impact? Join the Environment Agency’s Chemicals Surveillance and Emerging Risks team at an exciting time, as we transform how we use data through innovative monitoring techniques and new investigation programmes.

This two-year secondment offers a rare opportunity to step into a high-profile and influential role at the forefront of environmental protection. You will help shape how evidence on chemicals in the environment is understood, interpreted and applied, directly supporting national decision-making.

As the technical lead for chemicals data analysis, you will provide expert advice, strategic direction and professional leadership across the programme. Although the role does not include formal line management, you will influence analytical standards, mentor colleagues, and help embed innovative data science and statistical approaches within the team.

You will work collaboratively across the organisation to improve how data are collated, analysed and interpreted, ensuring our evidence base is robust, timely and fit for purpose. A key aspect of the role is developing open data products that enable partners, stakeholders and the wider community to access and use our data effectively. You will also communicate findings clearly and creatively, translating complex analyses into accessible outputs for both technical and non-technical audiences.

You do not need to be a chemist. Experience with environmental data or chemicals-related evidence is desirable, but your analytical expertise, curiosity and motivation to tackle complex, high-impact challenges are what matter most.

The Environment Agency is committed to building an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We value diversity and actively seek to create an environment where everyone can thrive.

Appropriate training will be provided, including support for your inclusive incident management objective.

As a dispersed national team, we work mainly via MS Teams, with occasional travel for key in person meetings and team events.
Experience/Skills Required:

You will have strong experience managing, analysing and interpreting large, complex datasets to support evidence- based decision-making. Experience with environmental datasets or an understanding of chemicals in the environment is beneficial when working with technical specialists. You should also have experience leading people and analytical work through coaching, mentoring and providing technical direction (without formal line management responsibility).

Skills

  • Strong coding and analytical capability using tools such as R, Python, Power BI or ArcGIS
  • Advanced Excel and proficiency with Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent attention to detail and enthusiasm for data
Strong organisational skills, able to plan and prioritise effectively
  • Clear, engaging communication skills, able to explain complex information to nontechnical audiences

Knowledge

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent relevant knowledge and experience or professional qualification equivalent.
  • Awareness of chemical risks or environmental regulation is desirable.
