Are you an experienced landfill engineering professional looking to make a national impact within one of the Environment Agency's highest-risk regulated sectors?
Working within our national Landfill Team, you will provide expert technical leadership and authoritative advice on landfill engineering and containment matters, helping to ensure the landfill sector is regulated effectively, consistently, and proportionately across England.
Using your knowledge and experience of landfill engineering, you will support operational teams, permitting specialists, colleagues in national teams, incident and enforcement activities, tackling complex technical challenges and helping deliver robust, evidence-based regulatory decisions. You will also play a key role in strengthening technical resilience across the organisation by developing the capability of colleagues through coaching, mentoring, and training.
You will:
- Provide national technical expertise on landfill engineering matters to Operations, Permitting, National and National Customer Contact Centre colleagues.
- Support complex incident response, compliance assessment, and enforcement activities.
- Develop, review, and quality assure internal and external technical guidance and advice.
- Work with operational teams to ensure regulatory decisions are consistent, proportionate, and defensible.
- Coach, mentor, and train staff across the business to strengthen organisational capability and resilience.
- Represent the Environment Agency with industry groups, trade associations, government departments, and other external stakeholders.
- Contribute specialist engineering expertise to national programmes, projects, and sector groups.

You’ll join our Landfill, Deposit for Recovery and Waste Climate Change team. We set regulatory standards and provide advice and guidance. We’re a dispersed team who work with a wide range of technical and project teams across the country.
We’re part of the Environment and Business Directorate. We inform and deliver the government's key environmental objectives; using evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation we influence policy, legislation and secure resources to do more for the environment.
We’re looking for a technical leader who believes that having a truly diverse, representative and engaged workforce is fundamental to protect the environment.
You will have significant experience of landfill regulation gained through varied, practical experience, in particular landfill containment and infrastructure engineering. You will work on your own initiative to take decisions and solve problems, while maintaining effective communication with the team and customers.
You will have excellent communication and influencing skills. You will apply these skills working with internal teams, industry and government.
You will have a good knowledge of the collection, analysis and interpretation of data and experience in developing and delivering training materials that builds knowledge and capability in others.
As a leader, you will be focussed on delivering and achieving results, meeting timescales and working to deadlines. Finally, you will be comfortable in working in an agile way turning your attention to different priorities.

You’ll have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible / hybrid.
