Job description

As a Team Leader, you’ll play a vital role in supporting your team to shape the future of recycling in England. Working within Waste Markets & Shipments (WM&S), you’ll help develop a team of technical officers who support reducing waste, improving recycling standards, and support businesses to operate more sustainably. You’ll be responsible for leading and managing your team to deliver strong outcomes, working closely with your Senior Technical Officer and the rest of your team. You will:

  • Manage and encourage health, safety and wellbeing ensuring best practice ways of working are in line with Environment Agency policies
  • Manage a team of technical officers, providing leadership, direction and support prioritisation of specific operational and regulatory activities
  • Monitor team and individual performance ensuring work is consistently delivered to the required standards and service levels
  • Promote inclusion by respecting differences in the workforce and building a supporting and engaging working environment
  • Be responsible for recruitment in your regime and sometimes the wider department, motivating and developing team members to achieve specific goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage difficult conversations with internal and external stakeholders, understand the audience and be able to communicate at the right level
  • Lead effective changes to policy and processes to improve efficiency and/ or safety of work

Knowledge of pEPR regulations, compliance and enforcement legislation is not essential and training will be provided. A valid full UK driving licence is essential and must be obtained prior to your application. We’ll invest in your growth with specialist training, mentoring, and opportunities to progress within the Environment Agency.

The interviews are likely to be held week commencing the 5th and/ or 11th of May 2026, and you will be asked to complete a short assessment prior to your interview date that will last 40 minutes.

The interview format will be either virtual or face-to-face. This will be confirmed nearer the time.

The role will be a mix of office and homeworking, with travel expected across both your area and nationally.

This post requires a full UK driving license.
